What are Free Radicals?

The term "free radicals" is fairly confusing, but you hear it more and more these days.

Free radicals are unstable molecules that can damage the cells in your body. They form when atoms or molecules gain or lose electrons. They are a natural byproduct of processes such as metabolism, but you can also be exposed to free radicals from environmental sources, including the following:

  • Radiation

  • Drugs

  • Pesticides

  • Alcohol

  • Fried food

  • Solvents

  • Cigarette smoke

  • Other pollutants

  • Processed food

So, why do free radicals matter? Over the years, free radicals damage your cells and organs, this speeds up the aging process but also can result in a number of diseases, including diabetes, dementia, cancer, and so many more.

Here are some ways to prevent free radicals:

  • Avoid foods rich in carbohydrates and sugar

  • Limit processed meats

  • Limit red meat

  • Limit alcohol

  • Eat foods rich in antioxidants

  • Eat superfoods

  • Limit sun exposure

  • Don’t smoke
