Summer vs. Winter Skincare

Updated: May 11, 2020

Your skin requires different care in the summer vs. the winter, make sure you're giving it all it needs! That doesn't mean that you necessarily need to change ALL of your products, but a few adjustments will go a long way! All recommended products can be purchased on our online store.

SUMMER

When the heat and the humidity levels are on the rise, your body sweats more in an attempt to keep cool, making your skin oilier and more prone to pimples and other irritation.

The most important thing to remember during the summer months is to keep your skincare routine simple! Because you're spending more time outdoors and the sun is unavoidable, summer months are NOT the time to try to make big changes to your skin with aggressive skincare treatments and products. Being too aggressive with your skin can actually cause more damage at this time.

During the summer, work on maintaining your skin and preventing damage. Also, make sure to let your skin breathe by wearing less makeup, continuing professional treatments, and maintaining a regular home care regimen. Here are some skincare tips for the summer months:

  1. Wear SPF: You should wear an SPF 365 days out of the year, BUT in the summer there are absolutely NO EXCUSES. SPF will prevent future damage and stop existing discolorations from getting worse. Recommended products: Z-Plus, Solares

  2. Use a Preventative Serum: A good Vitamin C serum is an absolute necessity during the day to prevent discolorations and aging. At night, incorporate some glycolic acid and Vitamin A a few times per week. Recommended products: Cellular Repair Concentrate, 5% Glycolic Solution, Retinoxyl Elixir, 5% Glycolic Creme, Discoloration Solution, Chiral-A Discoloration Solution

  3. Exfoliate: Keep your skin glowing by exfoliating 2 times per week. This will slough off dead skin cells and keep healthy, new cells on the surface. I typically recommend a gentle scrub once per week and an enzyme peel once per week UNLESS you have active acne. For active acne, skip the scrub and exfoliate with an enzyme peel 2 times per week. Recommended products: Cranberry Scrub, 5% Cranberry Peel, 5% Pumpkin Peel

  4. Hydrate with Hyaluronic Acid: Skip the heavy moisturizers in the summer and hydrate with a hyaluronic acid product, EVEN if you have oily skin. Dehydrated skin will only make your skin concerns worse. Recommended products: Hydrotant Gel, Hydro-Lane

  5. Detoxify with a Masque: In the summer you are sweating more and producing more oil. This can easily clog your pores. After exfoliating, use a clay masque 1-2 times per week to detoxify your skin and keep it looking its best. Recommended products: Purifying Masque (this masque exfoliates AND treats)

  6. Continue Professional Treatments: as stated above, you want to focus on maintaining your skin in the summer with services such as light therapy or gentle facial peels. Our Oxygen peel is also a great service for this time of year to get you exfoliated and glowing!

Lastly, don't forget to HYDRATE with water. Aim to drink AT LEAST half of your weight in ounces every day.

WINTER

Your skin takes a beating during the cold weather and can become dry, irritated and chapped, even if you spend most of your time indoors. A humidifier or diffuser in your bedroom at night can help with this!

During the winter, work on nourishing your skin and correcting concerns through more aggressive professional treatments and products. Here are some skincare tips for the winter months:

  1. Wear SPF: Winter is not an excuse to not wear your SPF. Remember - 365 days out of the year... rain or shine! SPF will prevent future damage and stop existing discolorations from getting worse. Recommended products: Z-Plus, Solares

  2. Recommended products: 5% Cranberry Peel, 5% Pumpkin Peel

  3. Heal with a Serum: Your skin takes a beating in the winter and needs some extra help to recover. Make sure you're giving it what it needs. Recommended product: Repair Serum

  4. Layer with Hyaluronic Acid: Hyaluronic Acid binds 1,000 times its weight in moisture to your skin. Using a serum with this ingredient under your moisturizer will make a world of a difference when looking to hydrate your skin! You'll also probably want to switch out your lighter moisturizer for a more nourishing one - contact us for recommendations! Recommended products: Hydrotant Gel, Hydro-Lane

  5. Hydrate with a Masque: After exfoliating, incorporate a hydrating masque 2 times per week during these dry months. Recommended products: Mineral Enzyme Masque (oily/acne) or Hydrotant Marine Masque (all skin types)

  6. Continue Professional Treatments: as stated above, winter is a great time to focus on correcting skin concerns with services such as facial peels. Our Oxygen peel is also a great service for this time of year to get you hydrated and glowing!
